Description

Documented by the Cuds on Coins attribution service, this pre-cud on the 1866 Two Cent Piece reverse represents an early stage of die deterioration that would eventually develop into a full retained die break (cud) if the die had continued in service. Pre-cuds are identified by a raised, slightly irregular area on the coin's surface where the die steel has begun to crack and separate but has not yet completely broken away — they represent the nascent stage of what collectors call a cud, frozen in time on coins struck before the break progressed to full separation. The catalog designation PC-2c-1866-01R follows the standardized naming convention: PC for pre-cud, 2c for the two-cent denomination, 1866 for the date, and 01R indicating the first cataloged reverse pre-cud for this issue. The Two Cent Piece series ran from 1864 to 1873, designed by James B. Longacre with an obverse featuring a shield device and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST — notably the first United States coin to bear this motto, which was adopted during the Civil War era. The reverse displays a wreath encircling the denomination TWO CENTS.
