Description

Two rim cuds are visible on the reverse of this 1865 Indian Head cent (Fancy 5 variety). A cud occurs when a piece of the die breaks away at the rim, and the planchet metal flows into the void, creating a raised, featureless area. In this case, two separate cuds appear on the reverse, one to the left and one to the right of 12 o'clock. The 1865 Fancy 5 variety features a tall, ornate "5" in the date with distinctive serifs, distinguishing it from the Plain 5 variety with its shorter, simpler digit.
