1865 Indian Head Cent (Fancy 5) Die Clash (Reverse)

Description

On this 1865 Indian Head cent struck with the Fancy 5 obverse die, a die clash is visible on the reverse, preserving transferred portrait elements in the coin's metal. Die clashes occur when obverse and reverse dies contact each other without a planchet; the resulting blow transfers a mirror impression of each die's design onto its opposite. On the reverse, the Indian portrait's chin and neck are clashed beneath the left side of the shield, while feather detail from the headdress appears transferred inside the right wreath. The 1865 Fancy 5 variety is a recognized subtype: the ornate "5" features a tall form with distinctive serifs, distinguishing it from the Plain 5 issued the same year. The die clash and Fancy 5 characteristic together make this a layered variety specimen of particular interest. Indian Head cents, designed by James B. Longacre and struck in bronze from 1864 onward, were produced when presses ran at high speed with primitive planchet-feeding mechanisms, creating frequent clash opportunities. Reverse die clashes showing clear transfer of the portrait into the wreath are especially sought.
