Description
Representing one of the most dramatic clash events on the Indian Head Cent series, this 1865 Fancy 5 variety exhibits near-full die clash marks from at least three planchet-less strike cycles — a triple clash producing extensive design transfer on both sides. On the reverse, the Indian's neck and chin from the obverse transferred into the wreath area, with three overlapping impressions from successive clashes depositing progressively shifted ghost images. The obverse carries reciprocal marks where reverse elements clashed into the portrait field. Near-full clash status indicates transferred images extend across a large percentage of the die surface rather than being confined to isolated areas. The Fancy 5 date variety features the tall, ornate numeral 5 with serifs, one of two styles produced in 1865 alongside the Plain 5. Struck during the Civil War's final year on the bronze composition adopted in mid-1864, this triple-clashed die provides evidence of production conditions where multiple successive misfeeds allowed the dies to contact each other repeatedly. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them.
