1857 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

On this scarce Flying Eagle Cent doubled die, a Class I clockwise spread is visible on USA. The obverse carries several significant die markers: a die failure above the D of UNITED, damage around the first S of STATES, a die scratch running from the right side of the second A of AMERICA northeast to the rim, a die scratch running southeast from the rim above the I of AMERICA, and a short die gouge southeast from the rim above the upper left of the D in UNITED. Cross-referenced as Snow S14, CONECA DDO-010, and Flynn DDO-004, this variety is well documented across the major Flying Eagle attribution systems. The concentration of die failure around UNITED and STATES, combined with the die scratches radiating from the rim near AMERICA, suggests this die experienced progressive deterioration in the legend area. Flying Eagle Cents were produced for only three years, making any documented die variety from the series particularly sought after by specialists in this short-lived denomination.
