PC-1c-1837-05 Pre-Cud

Description

Recently cataloged in February 2025, PC-1c-1837-05 documents a pre-cud on the 1837 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent in the Beaded Cords variety — a design feature referring to the treatment of the hair cords on Liberty's portrait. A pre-cud captures the transitional stage before a die fragment fully separates: the crack has formed and is visible as a raised line extending from the rim, but the broken piece remains attached, producing a line rather than the featureless blob of a complete cud. This is the fifth cataloged pre-cud die for the 1837 Coronet Head Cent, distinct from die 01R that documents a reverse pre-cud on the same denomination. The Beaded Cords sub-variety differentiates the Modified Matron Head from the earlier Plain Cords type, and this design distinction provides an additional layer of specificity when attributing 1830s large cent die errors. Pre-Civil War copper large cents were hand-struck in comparatively modest quantities, making each newly cataloged die failure a meaningful addition to the historical record.
