Description

Reaching back to the early 19th century, PC-1c-1837-01R documents a reverse pre-cud on the 1837 Modified Matron Head Coronet Head Cent in the Beaded Cords variety — a design distinction referring to the treatment of the hair cords on Liberty's portrait that differentiates the Modified Matron Head from the earlier type within the 1835-1839 series. A pre-cud captures the transitional moment before a die fragment fully separates: the crack that will eventually produce a cud has formed and is visible as a raised line at the rim, but the broken piece has not yet detached to create the featureless blob characteristic of a complete cud. The "R" suffix confirms reverse die placement.
