Description

A pre-cud is visible on the reverse of this 1837 Matron Head large cent (Newcomb N-11). Pre-cuds occur when die cracks develop along the rim in patterns that would eventually lead to a cud if the die continued in use. In this case, the die crack runs from the rim above the "A" in "STATES," through the top of the wreath, through the "A" and to the rim between the "A" and "M" in "AMERICA." The die cracks have not yet caused a piece of the die to break away, but they outline the area where a cud would have formed.
