1837 Matron Head Large Cent Newcomb-2 Obverse Retained Interior Die Break

Description

A retained interior die break is visible on the obverse of this 1837 Matron Head large cent (Newcomb-2). A retained interior die break occurs when a section of the die within the interior of the coin face (not at the rim) fractures but remains in place. In this case, the die crack runs vertically just inside the 9 o'clock stars with two die breaks along the vertical die crack. The broken piece stays in its original position, producing a raised area on the struck coin with visible crack lines around the affected zone, while still retaining most of the original design detail.
