Description

An unusual die crack is visible on the obverse of this 1793 Wreath cent of the Periods variety (so named for the periods after "LIBERTY" and the date). Unusual die cracks differ from standard rim-to-rim cracks in that they follow irregular paths, branch, or form distinctive patterns on the coin's surface. In this case, there are two circumferential die cracks; one running from the "I" in "LIBERTY," through the center of the "B" and along the bottom edge of the other letters and running into the field at the same arc. The second circumferential die crack runs from the rim around 7 o'clock and through the date. The 1793 Wreath cent was the second large cent design type, replacing the short-lived Chain cent design.
