Description
This 1795 Liberty Cap Right Half Cent of the Plain Edge, No Pole variety carries an unusual die crack running from the first T in STATES to the R in AMERICA on the reverse — a path that traverses multiple letters and intervening field space in an atypical trajectory distinct from the more common rim-to-rim cracks seen on early American copper. Unusual die cracks follow paths through the interior of the die face rather than radiating outward from the rim, suggesting structural weakness within the die metal at specific internal stress points rather than at the periphery. The Liberty Cap Right Half Cent, produced from 1794 to 1797, was designed by Robert Scot and features a Liberty bust facing right with a Phrygian cap on a pole (or without, as in the No Pole variety), struck in pure copper at approximately 6.74 grams with a diameter of about 23.5 mm. The Plain Edge, No Pole variety is one of the scarcer configurations of the 1795 half cent, distinguished from the Lettered Edge and With Pole varieties. As a product of the earliest years of United States Mint operations in Philadelphia, this half cent represents the challenges of early coinage production — dies were hand-engraved, copper planchets were often imperfectly prepared, and production pressures led to dies remaining in service well past their ideal lifespan. The half cent denomination, the smallest ever struck by the United States Mint, served essential commerce needs in the 1790s when the value of a half cent carried meaningful purchasing power. The unusual crack path from T to R reflects the internal metallurgical conditions unique to this particular die.
