Trade Dollar Era Patterns (1871-1873)
Coin Series
About This Series
Pattern coins from 1871 to 1873 document the legislative and artistic journey that produced the Trade Dollar — a denomination specifically created to compete with the Mexican eight-real peso in East Asian commerce, where American merchants needed a silver coin that matched or exceeded the peso's weight and acceptance. The pattern series includes William Barber's Commercial Dollar designs, experimental denominations like the Standard Silver Dollar, and various allegorical Liberty seated figures evaluated before the final Trade Dollar design was adopted in 1873. The Judd reference catalogs these patterns across multiple metals, recording copper, aluminum, and silver strikings that allowed Mint officials to evaluate designs before committing to production dies. Some patterns explore metrification proposals aligning American coinage with the French metric system. The Amazonian designs by William Barber, featuring a boldly muscular Liberty, are among the most artistically striking patterns of any era. These patterns are rated R-6 to R-8 on the Judd rarity scale, with most surviving in populations of 3 to 15 specimens. Collectively, they document the intellectual framework behind the Trade Dollar's creation — one of the most controversial denominations in American numismatic history.
