Introduced under the Philippine Coinage Act of 1903 during American territorial administration, the ten-centavo denomination underwent significant metallurgical change over four decades. Early issues (1903-1935) were struck in .750 fine silver (raised to .900 fine in 1907) at 2.7 grams and 17.5 mm, featuring a seated figure on the obverse and eagle with shield on the reverse. Production shifted among four facilities: Philadelphia, San Francisco (S), Denver (D), and the Manila Mint (M) after its 1920 opening. The transition to copper-nickel-zinc in 1937 reflected rising silver prices and approaching Philippine autonomy. Japanese occupation of Manila in 1942 forced wartime 1944-1945 issues to be struck at Philadelphia and San Francisco for the liberation campaign. Key dates include the low-mintage 1909-S and scarce Manila Mint issues of the 1920s.
