CU-50c(C)-1923S-01 Rim Cud

Description

A rim cud on the 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar, CU-50c(C)-1923S-01 combines a die break error with one of the classic early commemoratives. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, the Monroe Doctrine half dollar was designed by Chester Beach and commemorated the centennial of President Monroe's 1823 doctrine asserting American opposition to European colonization in the Western Hemisphere. This issue belongs to the Classic Silver Commemorative series (1892-1954), a group of half dollars, quarters, and dollars produced in limited quantities for specific anniversaries, expositions, and historical milestones. Rim cuds form when a section of the die edge fractures and detaches, leaving a void in the die that fills with metal during striking and produces a raised, featureless mass extending from the rim inward. Commemorative half dollars generally had lower mintages than regular-issue coins, and die errors on these special issues were less likely to survive quality control, making cuds on commemoratives notably scarce.
