Civil War Patterns (1860-1865)
Coin Series
About This Series
Between 1860 and 1865, the United States Mint produced an extraordinary series of experimental pattern coins against the backdrop of the nation's most devastating conflict. With the monetary system under extreme stress — gold and silver hoarded by a fearful public, and the government financing the war through paper greenbacks — Mint officials and outside engravers proposed new designs, alloy compositions, and denominations to restore confidence in circulating coinage. These patterns include trials in copper, nickel, aluminum, and various bronze alloys, testing whether base metals could replace the precious-metal coins that had vanished from commerce. Many incorporate explicitly patriotic themes reflecting wartime sentiment, including the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, which first appeared on pattern two-cent pieces in 1863 before its adoption on regular-issue coinage in 1864. Cataloged comprehensively in the Judd reference (United States Pattern Coins), Civil War patterns document proposals ranging from revised cent and two-cent designs to experimental five-cent pieces that would eventually lead to the Shield nickel of 1866. Key Judd numbers in this series — including J-305 through J-360 and related entries — command strong auction prices from specialists who prize their connection to a transformative period in American minting history. These patterns collectively record the Mint's urgent effort to redesign the nation's coinage during a period when the very survival of the Union remained uncertain.
