Between 1860 and 1865, the United States Mint produced an extraordinary series of experimental pattern coins against the backdrop of the nation's most devastating conflict. With the monetary system under extreme stress — gold and silver hoarded by a fearful public, and the government financing the war through paper greenbacks — Mint officials and outside engravers proposed new designs, alloy compositions, and denominations to restore confidence in circulating coinage.
