2023 Doubled Working Hub Reverse WWHR-001

Description

Powell, Jr. and attributed by the Wexler Team, the 2023 Bessie Coleman Quarter WWHR-001 is classified as a doubled working hub reverse variety — a form of doubling that originates earlier in the die-making process than standard doubled dies, occurring when a working hub impresses a working die with slight misalignment on successive impressions. The doubling manifests as extra thickness to the east on Coleman's nose and lips. The obverse presents significant die deterioration markers: a large pre-die break depression on the tip of the nose, while a north-south die crack runs from the eye and eyebrow into the forehead. Die gouges appear northeast of the 3 in the date, below the first 2, to the right of L in LIBERTY, and right of E in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a large die gouge between E and P in EPU, two gouges right of the pinky finger, and a gouge below B in PLURIBUS. This American Women quarter design celebrates Bessie Coleman, the first African American and first Native American woman to earn a pilot's license, adding historical significance to this modern doubled hub variety.
