2021 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014

Description

Fourteenth in the Wexler catalog of doubled die obverses for the 2021 Lincoln Shield Cent, WDDO-014 presents extra thickness on LIBERTY as its primary diagnostic. Two supplementary die markers further distinguish this die: a die gouge to the right of the second T in TRUST on the obverse, and another gouge above the right side of the shield on the reverse. Die gouges originate from incidental contact with sharp objects during die handling and transfer as small raised features on every coin struck from the affected die. The extra thickness on LIBERTY results from a secondary hub impression that shifted slightly during die sinking, creating doubled letter outlines visible under moderate magnification. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, now paired with Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010, appeared on copper-plated zinc planchets at 19mm and 2.5 grams. Examine the letters of LIBERTY for the doubled outlines, then verify by locating the die gouge right of the second T in TRUST and the gouge above the shield on the reverse.
