2021 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007

Description

Submitted by Leslie Trent Hatchell and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2021 1-cent WDDO-007, this Lincoln Shield Cent exhibits moderate extra thickness on LIBERTY, with a particularly telling diagnostic: the upper left of the Y in LIBERTY is considerably thicker than the upper right of the Y — an asymmetric thickness distribution within a single letter that reveals the precise direction of hub displacement. When one side of a letter shows markedly more thickness than the other, it indicates the secondary hub impression shifted in the direction of the thicker side, creating a unidirectional spread that varies in visibility depending on each stroke's orientation relative to the displacement vector. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge appearing as a dot below and between the R and U in TRUST, plus a small die gouge south of the second 2 in the date. The reverse shows no significant markers. No cross-references to other classification systems are currently known beyond the Wexler listing. The Lincoln Shield Cent, with the obverse by Victor David Brenner and the reverse by Lyndall Bass, was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2021 in copper-plated zinc composition at 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The Shield reverse, introduced in 2010, features a union shield with thirteen vertical stripes and a horizontal bar, symbolizing the states united in support of the federal government. The 2021 date places this variety among the more recent Lincoln Cent doubled dies, and the asymmetric Y thickness provides an unusually precise directional indicator — collectors can determine the approximate angle of the hub displacement simply by comparing the thickness of the two arms of the Y, making this variety particularly instructive for understanding doubled die mechanics.
