Description

Strong northeast spread producing an extra top roof line and an additional left side of the central doorway within the triangular pediment area defines this 2020 Jefferson nickel VDDR-004, cataloged by VarietyVista under provisional markers UVC-???? and DMR-00?. The northeast displacement direction means the secondary hub impression shifted both upward and to the right, creating ghost architecture above and beside the primary roof and doorway elements. The three-stage die progression shows both reverse and obverse at early die state in Stage A, with Stages B and C at mid and late die state unconfirmed. The "strong" spread designation indicates this variety presents more dramatically than many subtle Class VIII or close-spread doubled dies, making it accessible to collectors using moderate magnification. Monticello's distinctive neoclassical architecture, with its triangular pediment, columned portico, and central doorway, provides a rigid geometric framework where an extra roofline is immediately conspicuous. The extra roof appears as a raised line above the normal roof peak within the pediment triangle, while the duplicated doorway edge creates a visible second vertical line along the left side of the door opening. Felix Schlag designed the original Monticello reverse in 1938, and the current version, refined by Jamie Franki upon the design's 2006 restoration, carries slightly different proportions and detail levels compared to the pre-Westward Journey rendition. VarietyVista's VDDR-004 for the 2020 date represents the fourth doubled die reverse documented by that attribution service, and the strong spread nature likely places it among the more desirable DDR varieties for collectors assembling a modern Jefferson nickel variety set.
