Description

Ninth in the Wexler doubled die reverse catalog for the 2020 Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-009 presents Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling along the left side of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII varieties arise when the hub contacts the working die at a slight tilt rather than parallel, concentrating the doubling in regions where angular displacement is greatest. Obverse die markers include a die gouge on the scarf below Jefferson’s chin and a series of die gouges forming dots on the right cheek. On the reverse, a die gouge inside the top of the long right window and one between the M and E of AMERICA complete the identification suite. The 2020 Jefferson Nickel was struck during a year disrupted by pandemic-related coin circulation shortages that prompted the U.S. Mint to appeal to the public to spend their accumulated change. Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the Monticello door frame occupies the same diagnostic zone as other Jefferson Nickel WDDR varieties, establishing this area as a priority inspection point for cherrypickers.

Die Markers
