Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDR-001, this doubled die reverse variety appears on a 2020 Jefferson nickel from the Return to Monticello design series produced from 2006 to the present. The Jefferson nickel is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter. The primary doubling diagnostic on VDDR-001 presents as a light spread to the southwest, manifesting as an extra top roof line and an extra left side of the central doorway on the Monticello building facade. These architectural elements of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate provide sharply defined straight lines where even subtle hub displacement becomes detectable as a parallel shadow image. Multiple die stages have been documented with UVC and DMR codes pending assignment. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B shows a die depression in the field west of the building in early-to-mid die state with the obverse also in early-to-mid die state, and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). The die depression noted at Stage B is an interesting secondary characteristic, as field depressions can result from localized die stress or surface fatigue that develops during extended production use. The VarietyVista designation of VDDR uses the prefix V to distinguish their catalog numbering from other reference systems that use plain DDR designations. The 2020 date falls during a contemporary production period when Philadelphia was producing hundreds of millions of Jefferson nickels annually, and the Return to Monticello reverse, with its architectural detail, continues to yield new doubled die discoveries as variety hunters systematically examine modern coinage.
