Description

Cataloged in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under 2020-P WDDR-033, this Jefferson Nickel shows Class VIII tilted hub doubling visible below the upper left door frame of Monticello, above the steps. Class VIII doubling results from a rotational offset between hub and die during the hubbing press, producing a tilted secondary image rather than a simple radial spread. On the obverse, two die dots appear between the rim and Lincoln's hair below the ear — both serve as anchor markers for rapid variety screening. On the reverse, a die gouge is present inside the first U of PLURIBUS, and a separate die gouge sits between the M and E of AMERICA — two distinct reverse die markers that confirm attribution independent of the doubling. The 2020 Jefferson Nickel was struck at Philadelphia. WDDR-033 sits within a broad catalog of 2020-P reverse doubled dies, and the combination of documented obverse die dots alongside the two named reverse gouges provides collectors multiple confirmation points when evaluating candidates under magnification.
