Description

Two distinct doubling zones mark this thirty-first doubled die reverse for the 2020 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel: below the triangle above the center door above the steps, and below the upper portion of the door frame of the center door above the steps. The dual-zone manifestation — affecting both the triangular pediment and the door frame below it — indicates the Class VIII tilted hub displacement was sufficient to produce visible effects across adjacent architectural elements of Schlag's Monticello facade. Tilted hub doubling results from angular hub contact during the hubbing process, creating variable displacement that intensifies with distance from the tilt axis. Reverse die markers include small die gouges to the upper left of the second L of MONTICELLO and a small die gouge above the C of AMERICA, providing two diagnostic points within the reverse inscriptions. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2020-P WDDR-031, this variety adds to the extensive catalog of Class VIII tilted hub doubled dies on modern Jefferson Nickels, where the Monticello portico's geometric precision makes even subtle displacement detectable.
