Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2020-P WDDR-029, this Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubled die reverse was struck on a 2020 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson nickel from the Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series. The Class VIII doubling manifests below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, the same general area affected on several other tilted hub varieties from nearby dates in the Jefferson nickel series. Obverse die markers include two die gouges (described as dots) to the lower right of the first 2 of the date, while the reverse shows a die crack or depression to the left of the Monticello building, a die crack in the left arch, and a die dot inside the top portion of the small right window. The 2020 Jefferson nickel was composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.2 mm diameter. The Monticello design, adapted from Felix Schlag's original 1938 competition-winning entry and refined for the 2006 return to Monticello, includes architectural details of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia home that have proven particularly productive for doubled die variety hunting. The concentration of tilted hub varieties affecting the door frame area across multiple recent dates suggests that the specific geometry of this design feature — positioned at a consistent distance from where tilt axes typically fall — makes it a natural indicator of hub misalignment. The WDDR-029 number for a single year and mint demonstrates the sustained variety-hunting activity on modern Jefferson nickels.
