Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team under reference 2020-P WDDR-023, this twenty-third doubled die reverse for the 2020-P Jefferson Nickel presents Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) that manifests above and below the upper right portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps. The symmetrical distribution of doubling both above and below the door frame element suggests the tilt axis passed near this zone, with the door frame sitting at a position where the hub's angular contact produced visible displacement on both its upper and lower margins. Obverse die markers include a die gouge below the US of TRUST and a die dot to the right of designer Donna Weaver's initials DW, providing two obverse attribution points. Reverse markers consist of a die gouge (dot) below the B of PLURIBUS and a die gouge above the D of UNITED — two points positioned in the upper inscription area of the reverse. The 2020-P Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (5.0 grams, 21.21 mm diameter), and twenty-three DDRs for this date-mint confirms the active variety census maintained for modern Jefferson Nickels. The Return to Monticello reverse design, with its detailed architectural rendering of Jefferson's Virginia home, has proven consistently productive for doubled die documentation, as the building's geometric precision — windows, doors, columns, steps — provides natural reference frames where even subtle hub displacement creates measurable doubled contours.
