Description

On the 2020 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel, the WDDR-018 variety exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible above and below the left side of the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the Monticello steps. The Wexler designation is 2020-P WDDR-018. The obverse carries a die gouge to the right of Jefferson's collar, a subtle but reliable pickup point for separating this die pair from others in the series. Reverse die markers include a die gouge between the lower portions of the first T and A of STATES and another die gouge positioned above the letters NT in CENTS. The doubling's appearance both above and below the door frame's left side distinguishes this variety from entries that show spread in only one direction relative to the architectural element. Jefferson nickel collectors focused on modern Class VIII varieties will note that the 2020 production year continued the pattern of tilted hub doubling concentrated around the Monticello door frame area that has characterized this denomination's doubled die discoveries for over a decade.
