Description

Attributed by Charles Hudson and cataloged as 2020-P WDDR-013, this Jefferson Nickel from the Return to Monticello series presents Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling manifesting as a portion of the right side of the triangle below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps. While sharing the same Class VIII mechanism and general architectural doubling zone as the related 2020-P WDDR-035, this variety displays the displacement on the right side of the triangle rather than the left side, confirming it was produced by a different die with a distinct tilt orientation during its hubbing event. This right-side versus left-side triangle distinction is the key diagnostic separator between the two varieties for collectors examining 2020-P nickels for center-door area doubling. Obverse die markers include a die dot between the U and S of TRUST and a die dot in the field to the lower left of Jefferson's hair to the left of his face. Reverse markers feature a die gouge to the left of the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM, a die gouge to the upper left of the C of CENTS, and a die gouge to the lower right of the second A of AMERICA — a wide distribution of diagnostic markers across the reverse that facilitates confident attribution from multiple examination points. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter, the 2020-P Jefferson Nickel features the Monticello reverse restored in 2006 and Victor David Brenner's enduring obverse design concept. Charles Hudson's attribution of this variety contributes to the growing body of documented Class VIII tilted hub varieties on modern Jefferson Nickels, where the fine architectural detail of Monticello provides an ideal canvas for revealing subtle hub tilt effects that might go unnoticed on simpler designs.
