2020 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Charles Hudson and cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2020-P WDDR-012, this Jefferson Nickel reverse die exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling showing above the right side of the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling — the tilted hub mechanism — produces spread that radiates outward from a tilt axis, with the direction and magnitude of doubling varying at each point on the die face according to its distance and angular position relative to the axis of tilt. On WDDR-012, the affected area sits in the upper-center zone of the Monticello facade where the angular displacement generated enough offset to leave a visible secondary impression above the door frame. Five die markers across both dies provide robust attribution support. The obverse carries a die chip on the right side of Jefferson's left eyebrow and a die dot below the U of TRUST. The reverse presents three distinct markers: two die gouges inside the C of CENTS, a die gouge between the E and R of AMERICA, and a die gouge to the upper left of the F of FIVE. This concentration of reverse markers around the denomination and national inscription areas — spread across three separate letters — creates a multi-point fingerprint that uniquely identifies this working die. The 2020-P Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper / 25% nickel composition at 5.0 grams. Collectors should focus magnification on the center door frame above the steps, using south-angled lighting to highlight the tilted hub spread against the architectural geometry.
