Description

Attributed by Jeff Stanley and carrying the Wexler Variety ID 2020-P WDDR-010, this Class VIII (Tilted Hub) doubled die reverse was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on a 2020 Jefferson nickel. The coin is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a diameter of 21.2 mm, and is part of the Jefferson Nickels Return to Monticello 2006 to Date series featuring Jamie Franki's updated portrait of Thomas Jefferson and Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse redesigned with sharper detail. The Class VIII doubling manifests below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, a location that requires careful examination under at least 5x magnification. Die markers essential for proper attribution include an obverse die dot on Jefferson's right ear, while the reverse carries a small die gouge between the R and I of AMERICA, a die gouge to the right of the small right window, and a small die gouge to the upper left of the M of MONTICELLO. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub is not perfectly parallel to the die during the hubbing process, creating displacement that varies in strength across the design depending on distance from the tilt axis. This variety demonstrates how even modern minting technology is not immune to hub misalignment, producing collectible varieties on coins struck decades after the introduction of single-squeeze hubbing.
