2020 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

Attributed by P. Hunter and cataloged as 2020-P WDDR-008 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling with doubling visible below the upper left portion and along the left edge of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello — an architectural-detail doubling pattern where the hub's tilted secondary impression produced a secondary door frame outline partially visible alongside the primary. Obverse die markers include two slanted die scratches in the field to the upper right of Jefferson's forehead — two parallel lines in the otherwise clean field area that provide a distinctive and easily located diagnostic pair. The reverse carries three markers: a die gouge to the lower right of the second L of MONTICELLO, a slanted die scratch below the first U of PLURIBUS, and a die scratch extending from the lower portion of the S in PLURIBUS to the first U of UNUM — this last marker tracing a path between two adjacent words that serves as a connecting landmark between design elements. The 2020 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The current Monticello reverse design, restored in 2006 after the Westward Journey series, is a refined version of Felix Schlag's original 1938 rendering of Thomas Jefferson's iconic plantation home.
