Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2019 1¢ WDDO-029, this doubled die obverse was discovered on a 2019 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint. The primary diagnostic shows extra thickness on LIBERTY with no corresponding extra thickness on the date, indicating a hub displacement that affected the inscription area while leaving the date region unaffected — a characteristic that can help distinguish this variety from others where the date also shows displacement. Obverse die markers include a small die chip centered under the E of LIBERTY, two die chips touching the top of and to the right of the first T of TRUST, and a die crack in Lincoln's hair. Reverse markers show a die crack at the top left side of the shield and a die crack extending through the T of CENT. The 2019 cent was struck in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper plating) at 2.5 grams and 19 mm, part of the Lincoln Shield Cents 2010 to Date series featuring Lyndall Bass's shield reverse. The high WDDO number of 029 indicates substantial variety-hunting activity on 2019 Philadelphia cents. The multiple die cracks documented on both obverse and reverse suggest this die pair was in active production long enough for stress fractures to develop, meaning the doubled die characteristics are accompanied by progressive die deterioration features that add visual character. The extra thickness on LIBERTY without date involvement provides a clear attribution checkpoint for collectors examining potential matches.
