Description

Sloped extra thickness on LIBERTY and the date — most visible on the 20 — gives this 2019 Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die obverse a distinctive doubling profile that differs from the sharp separation seen in more dramatic DDOs. The sloped appearance results from a slight angular displacement during hubbing that produced gradual, wedge-like thickening rather than clean secondary images. Obverse die markers include a die chip at the east end of the top crossbar of the E of LIBERTY, a die chip below the right side of B of LIBERTY, and two die dents at the rim above the E of WE. On the reverse, a sweeping die crack appears above the PLU of PLURIBUS. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 2019 1¢ WDDO-023. Twenty-three documented doubled die obverses for the 2019 Philadelphia Mint cent reflects continued active research on current Lincoln Shield Cent production. The Shield reverse, introduced in 2010 to replace the Lincoln Bicentennial designs, has generated a substantial body of die variety research as collectors and attributors examine modern coinage with the same rigor applied to earlier series.
