2019 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-020
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2019 1¢ WDDO-020, this Lincoln Shield Cent displays sloped extra thickness on LIBERTY, with no doubling visible on the date — a selective doubling pattern where the hub displacement affected the LIBERTY inscription area but did not reach the date region, indicating a localized tilt or offset during the hubbing process. Obverse die markers include small die chips to the left of the middle and under the right side of the 2 in the date, a die chip below the left side crossbar and well south of the left side of the second T in TRUST, and a die dent touching the rim below Lincoln’s bust. The reverse exhibits a die crack extending from the rim to the bottom of the left side of the scroll and continuing up to the O in ONE. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2019 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The Shield reverse, designed by Lyndall Bass, features a Union shield with thirteen vertical stripes beneath a scroll bearing ONE CENT. Victor David Brenner’s obverse Lincoln portrait has been in continuous use since 1909. The “sloped” character of the extra thickness on LIBERTY indicates the doubling is not uniform across the word but varies in intensity along its length, consistent with a Class II or similar tilt-based mechanism where displacement changes relative to the pivot axis. The die crack on the reverse extending from the rim through the scroll to the O in ONE documents progressive structural die failure that provides a secondary identification marker for this specific die pair.
