Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2019 1¢ WDDO-019, this doubled die obverse variety was struck on a 2019 Lincoln Shield cent at the Philadelphia Mint. The coin was produced in copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter, featuring Victor David Brenner's iconic Lincoln portrait on the obverse and Lyndall Bass's union shield design on the reverse. The obverse die carries multiple diagnostic markers: a small die chip between the E and R of LIBERTY, a small die chip below the right side of the G in GOD, two close small die chips centered between the bottom of N in IN and G in GOD, and a die chip to the left of Lincoln's shoulder. The reverse die marker consists of a die crack extending southwest from the bottom of the T in CENT. The existing description references die markers but the specific nature and location of the hub doubling on this WDDO-019 die requires careful examination of the inscription elements and date where doubled die obverse varieties on Lincoln cents typically manifest. The Wexler Variety ID notes include an attribution reference designated "s:" which likely refers to supplementary documentation. Philadelphia produced approximately 3.5 billion cents in 2019, a production volume that consumed a very large number of obverse dies and created numerous opportunities for the hub misalignment events that generate doubled die varieties. The 2019 date has yielded a substantial number of both DDO and DDR varieties, reflecting the active community of variety researchers who examine modern Lincoln cents systematically. The multiple die chips documented on the obverse, combined with the reverse die crack, suggest this die was approaching later stages of its working life when many of the diagnostic markers become most pronounced.
