Description

Documented by the Wexler Team and cataloged as 2019 1¢ WDDO-010, this Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield cent displays significant extra thickness on the date and on LIBERTY, where the upper left of the Y is noticeably thicker than the upper right. That asymmetric thickening — one side of the Y visibly heavier than the other — serves as a distinctive identifying feature separating this variety from other 2019 doubled die obverses. The mechanism is hub doubling: slight misalignment between successive hub impressions transferred the Y's left stroke with overlapping reinforcement while leaving the right stroke at normal thickness. Die markers on the obverse include a small die gouge appearing as a dot to the right of the upper Y in LIBERTY. The reverse carries a small die chip at the top left of the shield, north of the I in PLURIBUS. These diagnostics allow attribution even on specimens where wear has diminished the doubling's visibility. The Lincoln Shield design, introduced in 2010, features Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse paired with Brenner's iconic Lincoln portrait, and varieties like WDDO-010 reward systematic examination of modern cent production.
