Third in the Wexler obverse doubled die census for the 2019 Lincoln Shield cent, WDDO-003 presents strong extra thickness on LIBERTY with light extra thickness extending to the date — a two-zone doubling pattern that indicates broad hub displacement across Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait area. The strong designation on LIBERTY elevates this variety above many Shield cent doubled dies that carry only light or close spread ratings, making it a more visually rewarding attribution target for collectors. The Wexler Team documented this under Wexler Variety ID: 2019 1¢ WDDO-003, noting no significant obverse die markers but identifying a distinctive reverse diagnostic: a die chip on the top left side of the shield north of the LU in PLURIBUS. Die chips occur when small fragments of the die steel break away, leaving a depression in the die that produces a raised irregular blob on struck coins — in this case, a chip positioned above the shield's upper-left corner near the inscription. Philadelphia struck approximately 3.54 billion cents in 2019, continuing the enormous production volumes that characterize modern cent manufacturing and generating the vast number of working dies necessary to sustain continuous high-speed coining operations.
