Description

Sharing the WDDO-002 designation with related 2019 America the Beautiful quarter issues, this variety presents significant extra thickness on the RTY of LIBERTY — a diagnostic consistent across the family of 2019-P quarter obverse dies cataloged under this attribution. The Wexler Team identified the obverse as very late die state (VLDS) with die deterioration doubling severely affecting the QUARTER DOLLAR inscription, while the reverse carried no significant markers. The publication history for this variety includes a documented photo error in Wexler's Coin World column where images of a 2001-P North Carolina quarter with die deterioration doubling were mistakenly used in place of the correct WDDO-002 photographs, and vice versa. This editorial cross-contamination has been corrected in the online reference, but collectors who consulted the original print column should be aware of the discrepancy. John Flanagan's Washington quarter obverse design, in production since 1932, provides the LIBERTY inscription along the upper rim where hub doubling manifests as thickened letter strokes that exceed the normal relief of correctly struck specimens. The VLDS classification means the die had been in service long enough to develop substantial surface degradation, and separating the genuine hub doubling on RTY from the deterioration-induced pseudo-doubling on QUARTER DOLLAR requires understanding that hub doubling is established at the time of die manufacture while deterioration doubling develops progressively during the die's production life. No cross-references from CONECA or other attribution systems are currently known, making the Wexler Variety ID 2019-P 25¢ NMI WDDO-002 the primary catalog entry for this variety.
