Description

Attributed by Aaron Laramee, the 2018 WDDR-014 Jefferson nickel from Philadelphia displays Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling below the upper right portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The Wexler designation is 2018-P WDDR-014. Reverse die markers are particularly diagnostic on this variety: a die crack appears on the left edge of the Monticello building, a die gouge shaped like a dot sits between the I and T of UNITED, a die dot is found inside the O of OF, and another die dot marks the right leg of the R in AMERICA. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The die crack along the building's left edge is especially useful for quick authentication, as it provides a visible indicator even before magnification reveals the more subtle tilted hub doubling on the door frame. Aaron Laramee's attribution work on Jefferson nickel varieties has contributed significantly to the catalog of modern Class VIII doubled dies on this denomination.
