Description

A companion in type to the 2016 WDDR-004, this 2018 Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse also exhibits Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling, with spread appearing along the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. The architectural detail of the doorway proves particularly susceptible to this class of doubling because its fine vertical and horizontal lines readily reveal even minor displacement from a tilted hub entry. Reverse die markers include a small die gouge as a dot to the left of the first S of STATES and a short die gouge to the upper right of the L of PLURIBUS, while no markers are noted on the obverse. Class VIII doubling results from the hub contacting the die at a slight tilt, concentrating visible spread at the periphery of the tilt zone while elements near the axis remain unshifted. Modern die production uses single-squeeze hubbing presses capable of impressing the full design in one operation, yet tilted hub entries still occur on twenty-first-century coinage. No expert name or cross-references are listed.
