2018 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
ErrorDescription
Classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling, WDDR-006 on the 2018 Jefferson Nickel displays doubling along the upper left portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps. Die markers on the obverse include a die dot to the lower left of the 8 in the date. The reverse exhibits two die stages: Stage A shows three die gouges in the field above the right side roof of the building along with a die break on the left side of the building, while Stage B presents many die gouges above the dome and many die gouges on the center portion of the building. Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling results from the hub being tilted relative to the die surface during hubbing, creating a form of doubling that varies in intensity across the die face depending on distance from the tilt axis. The concentration of visible doubling on the upper left door frame suggests this area was positioned furthest from the tilt axis on this particular die, receiving the maximum angular displacement. The dramatic progression from Stage A (three gouges and a break) to Stage B (many gouges above dome and on the building center) documents significant die deterioration over the course of production, with the increasing number and distribution of die gouges indicating progressive die fatigue. The 2018 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel, 5.000 grams, 21.2 mm diameter), part of the Return to Monticello series that restored Felix Schlag's original design. The obverse die dot near the date provides a quick preliminary screening marker before detailed examination of the reverse door frame area.
