2018 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

On this 2018 Philadelphia Jefferson nickel, Class VIII tilted hub doubling appears below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub contacts the die face at a slight angle during sinking, creating displacement that varies in magnitude across the die surface depending on distance from the tilt point. The door frame area of the Monticello design is a productive region for detecting this type of spread because the architectural lines serve as natural reference points. Obverse markers include a short die gouge to the upper right of the U of TRUST. The reverse presents several diagnostics: a die dot at the rim between L and U of PLURIBUS, a die chip near the roof on the left side of the building, a die crack and chip along the left edge of the building, and a die chip between the right side of the building and designer's initials FS. The progressive die damage along the left edge of the Monticello building suggests structural weakness in that portion of the die, and these markers collectively help distinguish WDDR-003 from other tilted hub varieties on Jefferson nickels.
