Description

Attributed by Aaron Laramee under the Wexler designation 2018-P WDDR-013, this Jefferson Nickel variety is classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling. The doubling presents below the upper left portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps — a subtle but identifiable displacement in the architectural detail of Jefferson's estate. Two reverse die gouges aid attribution: one below IV of FIVE and another below the S of CENTS. Class VIII doubling results from the hub entering the die at a slight tilt during one of the multiple impressions needed to fully sink the design, producing displacement that is strongest on one side of the die and diminishes toward the pivot point. The Monticello reverse has been in continuous use since 1938, and its detailed classical architecture — with columns, pediment, dome, and doorway — provides numerous fine-line elements where tilted hub doubling can manifest. The two die gouges serve as definitive markers for confirming this specific die.
