Description

Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the 2018 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel WDDR-015 manifests along the upper left portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the iconic front steps. The reverse carries a diagnostic small die gouge to the left of the N in MONTICELLO, while no significant obverse markers have been noted. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during die manufacture, producing localized separation in the area of greatest angular displacement rather than uniform spread across the entire die face. Monticello's center door and its surrounding architectural frame provide some of the most precise geometric reference points on any U.S. coin reverse, making even minor hub displacement detectable along the straight lines of the door frame. The 2018 date falls within the current era of the Jefferson Nickel, using the return-to-Monticello reverse adopted in 2006 after the Westward Journey interlude. Door frame doubling is a recurring diagnostic location across multiple Jefferson Nickel WDDR varieties.

Die Markers

  • Reverse: Small die gouge to left of N of MONTICELLO.
