2018 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011

Description

Sharing the same Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling mechanism and general design area as its companion WDDR-008, this 2018 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-011 nevertheless originates from a completely different die with distinct die markers and a subtly different expression of the doubling. The tilted hub displacement appears below the upper portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps — the same general region as WDDR-008, but the specific portion of the frame affected and the degree of displacement differ, reflecting a unique tilt angle during this die's hubbing. The obverse carries a die dot on Jefferson's collar, while the reverse displays its own set of markers: die gouges to the lower right of the D in UNITED, a die gouge above the M of AMERICA, and a die gouge to the right of the M in UNUM. This entirely different marker constellation confirms that WDDR-011 was produced from a separate die than WDDR-008, despite both showing Class VIII doubling in the Monticello doorway area. The presence of two distinct dies with similar tilted hub characteristics on the same date suggests that a particular hub or hubbing press configuration during 2018 production may have been predisposed to generating this type of displacement. Collectors should compare marker locations carefully to distinguish between these two varieties.
