Description

Another Class VIII tilted hub doubling variety on the Jefferson Nickel, WDDR-009 of the 2018-P issue shows doubling below the upper left portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door above the steps. Like WDDR-004 of the 2017 issue, the tilted hub displaced design elements in the doorway area, though this variety affects the upper left portion specifically, distinguishing it from other Class VIII varieties on adjacent dates. The Monticello steps and doorframe are susceptible to revealing hub displacement because their fine parallel lines and geometric precision make even slight deviations detectable. No significant obverse die markers were noted. The reverse carries a small die gouge between the lower portions of F in OF and the first A of AMERICA as a confirming diagnostic. Felix Schlag's Monticello has appeared on the Jefferson Nickel reverse since 1938, with the architectural detail providing a rich field for variety diagnostics. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at the Philadelphia Mint, this Jefferson Nickel documents Class VIII tilted hub doubling on the upper left door frame of Monticello, a companion to similar tilted hub effects on adjacent dates.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: None noted.
  • Reverse: Small die gouge between lower portions of F of OF and first A of AMERICA.
