2018 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Class VIII tilted hub doubling manifests below the upper left portion of the door frame on Monticello's center door, just above the steps, on this 2018 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel. Class VIII doubling — also called tilted or pivoted hub doubling — occurs when the hub is slightly tilted relative to the die face during one of the multiple hubbing impressions required to create a working die, producing a spread that varies in intensity across the die surface. Reverse die markers provide important confirmation points: die breaks appear on both the left and right sides of the Monticello building, a die gouge sits below the T of MONTICELLO, and another die gouge is positioned to the right of the E in FIVE. No significant obverse die markers were noted. The Jefferson Nickel has been struck continuously since 1938, and the Return to Monticello reverse design reintroduced in 2006 restored the familiar architectural depiction of Jefferson's Virginia estate after the Westward Journey series interlude. Monticello's neoclassical facade, with its multiple windows, columns, and the distinctive octagonal dome, provides an exceptionally detailed canvas where even subtle hub doubling becomes detectable — particularly in the door and window areas where straight architectural lines make any displacement immediately apparent. The 2018 Philadelphia Mint produced hundreds of millions of nickels, and WDDR-007 represents one of several doubled die reverses documented for this date.
