Cataloged as ADC-1c-2017P-03 by the MadDieClashes project, this 2017-P Lincoln Shield cent is the third documented example of an atypical die clash on this issue, discovered by Stephen Young. Unlike a standard die clash — where obverse and reverse dies meet without a planchet and transfer mirrored design elements — an atypical die clash involves offset or rotation between clash events, producing unusual partial transfers. On this specimen, portions of UNU and the P from E PLURIBUS UNUM are visible in the fields alongside scattered shield details. A horizontal die scratch above STAT of STATES on the reverse provides a secondary locating marker. Attributors should match clash marks against specific landmarks such as the exact location of shield stripes and Lincoln's nose, which will differ from one clashed die pair to the next — making side-by-side comparison with documented examples essential.
