Description

Eighteenth in the Wexler census of doubled die reverses for the 2017-P Ozark National Scenic Riverways Quarter (reference: 2017-P 25c MO WDDR-018), this variety extends the documentation of hub doubling events deep into the die population for this Missouri ATB design. At WDDR-018, the catalog has passed through the most prominent early discoveries and into territory where each successive variety may exhibit progressively more focused or subtle displacement characteristics — still diagnostically genuine and mechanistically identical in origin to WDDR-001, but potentially requiring more careful examination to identify. The Ozark Riverways reverse features one of the ATB program's most complex compositions: a canoeist traversing a spring-fed river through the Ozark landscape, rendered by Ronald D. Sanders and Joseph Menna with attention to geological and botanical detail that provides numerous surfaces where hub doubling registers as displaced contours. No cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are known. The Philadelphia Mint produced these quarters on copper-nickel clad planchets at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter for general circulation distribution during 2017. Variety collectors building comprehensive Ozark Riverways DDR sets will note that WDDR-018 represents one of the final varieties in the main body of discoveries (with the census extending to at least WDDR-021), placing it among the later contributions to a die study that thoroughly surveyed the Philadelphia Mint's 2017 reverse die output for this design.
