2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2017-P 25-cent MO WDDR-002, this doubled die reverse on the 2017 Ozark National Scenic Riverways quarter from the America the Beautiful series shows doubling manifesting as two extra stones on the top left side of the cellar window — a diagnostic feature that creates a visibly altered window surround on the Alton Mill design. Two die stages have been documented: Stage A shows no significant markers on either side, while Stage B develops a small die gouge above the right side of the T in QUARTER on the obverse, with the reverse gaining a die chip between the branches directly below the S in RIVERWAYS and a pre-die break depression above the center of the left roof. The pre-die break depression at Stage B is particularly noteworthy as it indicates incipient die failure — a subsurface crack that had begun to manifest as a sunken area on the die face before the die was retired. This variety is noted as being very similar to WDDR-029, with collectors advised to compare the doubling patterns carefully to distinguish between the two die marriages. The 2017 ATB quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-nickel clad planchets weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. The Ozark Riverways quarter, designed by Ronald D. Sanders and sculpted by Joseph Menna, depicts the Alton Mill along the river — an architectural subject whose stone masonry and window details provide numerous reference points for detecting hub doubling, as the regular geometric patterns of stonework amplify even subtle displacements.
