2017 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team under the designation 2017-P 25c MO WDDR-003, this doubled die reverse on the 2017 Philadelphia Mint Ozark National Scenic Riverways quarter shows doubling manifesting as an extra stone on the top right side of the cellar window — a visually distinctive effect that transforms an architectural detail of the historic Alley Mill depicted on the design. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge above the T in QUARTER, while the reverse shows a die gouge between the tree branch and the K in OZARK, along with pre-die break depressions above and below some of the tree branches. Pre-die break depressions indicate areas where the die surface is beginning to sink before an actual crack develops, providing evidence of early-stage die fatigue that had not yet progressed to fracture. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways quarter, designed by Ron Sanders, depicts Alley Spring and the historic Alley Mill in Missouri's Ozark region, and the detailed architectural rendering of the mill building and surrounding landscape provides rich terrain for doubled die variety research. The extra stone effect — where doubling creates what appears to be an additional stone block in the cellar window masonry — demonstrates how hub misalignment can produce visually intuitive effects on detailed architectural designs that go beyond simple letter doubling.
